Beaches and Water Sports in Dubai

With Dubai’s numerous fine beaches that offers a wide range of  recreational and entertainment facilities, together with Dubai’s year-round sunshine and superb soft sandy beaches, Dubai has become a much-preferred winter destination for  many Western tourists.  Winter is the best season to enjoy Dubai’s beaches as the weather is much pleasant and the temperature is much bearable than the scorching hot Dubai summers.

Much of the city’s prominent beaches are found along Jumeirah Road, particularly on the whole stretch of Jumeirah beach.  The most famous beach in the city is a long stretch of soft sand on the Arabian Gulf, lined with private hotels and resorts.  One of the city’s well-known resort hotels that provide access to Jumeirah’s soft sand is the Jumeirah beach hotel.  This wave-shaped beach hotel is as much as an iconic symbol as the Burj Al Arab.  Yet, in spite of its grandiose appearance, the Jumeirah Beach Hotel is a down-to-earth hotel much loved by young European families in search of leisure and fun under the Dubai winter sun.  Aside from the private beach, it also features several recreational facilities, such as a children’s club with a family adventure playground and the Wild Wadi water park, all of which are geared towards the enjoyment of all its guests.  Its other leisure amenities include health and sports facilities, fitness and spa centers, swimming pools, and restaurants.

Another premiere resort hotel found on the Jumeirah Beach is the Sheraton Jumeirah Beach Resort & Towers.  Much like the former, this exclusive resort hotel provides a private access to the soft sands of the Jumeirah Beach, where one can enjoy a picnic with friends and family or simply enjoy the Gulf’s pristine turquoise waters. The Sheraton Jumeirah Beach Resort also features sport facilities, wherein it takes advantage of Jumeirah Beach’s features ideal for such activities.  Some water sport activity afforded by the beach resort is beach volleyball, squash, and swimming.  Its fitness and health centers are premiere features of the Sheraton Jumeirah Beach Hotel dedicated for its clients’ wellness and being.  Combining all of these with the beach hotel’s roster of world-class restaurants and luxurious guestrooms and suites, the Sheraton Jumeirah Beach resort provides all the amenities for a leisure time under the winter sun.

The Le Meridien Royal Beach Resort Hotel is another five-star and world-class beach hotel that is lined up on the Jumeirah Beach.  Located on a private beach that overlooks the breath-taking Arabian Gulf, the hotel sits amidst picturesque landscaped gardens set against the Jumeirah coastline.  Between the hotel and the ocean is the soft white sand of the beach that is most ideal for leisure and recreational activities. The hotel features various facilities, such as those   for sport activities, like tennis, Squash, and swimming, health clubs and saunas, and first-class restaurants and night clubs—all of which are dedicated to provide the utmost pleasure and relaxation to its patrons.  In addition to these is the hotel’s over 500 luxurious guestrooms and suites, made even more exceptional with the personalized service rendered by the staff.

Adding to this roster of world-class resort hotels on the Jumeirah Beach is the Westin Dubai Mina Seyahi Beach Resort & Marina.  As the hotel overlooks the pristine turquoise waters of the Arabian Gulf, with a private stretch of  soft white sandy beaches and an amphitheater, the hotel is a most ideal location for weddings, gala dinners, and concerts.  Aside from the excellent water sport facilities featured in the hotel itself, the Westin Dubai Mina Seyahi Beach Resort & Marina is within close proximity to the city’s leisure and recreational facilities.  These include the Mall of the Emirates,   which is the largest shopping center outside of North America; and three championship golf courses, one of which is the PGA tour Emirates Golf Course.

Most certainly, Jumeirah Beach is not closed off to the public for the exclusive use of the above mentioned hotels and their guests. Interspersed amongst these luxury five-star resort hotels are several public accessed marine beaches. Another public accessed beach in the city is found on the Deira side of the Dubai Creek, particularly at the Al Mamzar Park. In spite of being a public accessed beach, the area features convenient amenities, such as picnic areas, food kiosks, barbecue sites, and playgrounds.

Aside from the most apparent reasons for the popularity of Dubai beaches, the city’s white sand paradise also plays hosts to various water sport activities. One of the most common and most well-developed water sport activity in Dubai is scuba diving. This is an all-year round activity which is enjoyed by both local and international scuba diving enthusiasts.  The Arabian Gulf is blessed with crystal clear water that is untouched by pollution or any tampering of nature.  With the water’s depth ranging from five meters to thirty meters, scuba diving enthusiasts will certainly be not lacking in challenge and interesting sites to explore. Adding to these exciting sites and challenges are the exotic marine life, astounding coral reef formations, and the fascinating wrecks found near the Jumeirah coastline.

Sailing is another popular water sport in Dubai. The Gulf’s condition—minimum water currents and normally calm winds with some periods of tumultuous winds—have made this water sport popular with boating enthusiasts from the region and all over the world.

Water skiing is but another water sport that has gained prominence in Dubai. The Gulf’s warm waters and the year-round sunshine has made the city’s waters a magnet for both beginners and experienced enthusiasts. As evidence of its popularity and the position of the city as a premiere water skiing paradise, the Dubai Water Sports Association holds an annual water skiing competition with top European and American athletes competing in the event.

As mundane as it might sound, swimming has become one of the most popular water sport in Dubai. Most of the resort hotels found in  Dubai have facilities for this sport, either  in pools or in private beaches where natural swimming in the Gulf’s warm waters are possible.

Facilities for these activities are commonly found in resorts and private clubs. Most of the resort hotels will feature two or more facilities that would cater to a specific sport. Some of the hotels that feature water sport facilities are the Jebel Ali Hotel and Golf Resort, Dubai Marine Beach Resort and Spa, Metropolitan Resort and Beach Club, Le Royal Meridien Beach Resort and Spa, Sheraton Jumeirah Beach Hotel and Towers, Royal Mirage Jumeirah Beach Dubai, The Jumeirah Beach Hotel, and the Ritz Carlton-Dubai.
