A friend of mine works in a construction company in Dubai. A couple of days back he came back to home on a one month leave. He explained me his daily routine as a worker. According to him they make them work 12 hours a day, while paying only 600 AED a month. And also they give a small room to 15 to 20 guys combined with 6 or 7 triple decker beds. Also he said the work is very hard to do and only because of his family's financial position he is working there, otherwise he would never do such kind of hard work.
According to him, they don't even get enough time to sleep. He used to be very nice, I mean, his habits.. but now he got used to chewing tobacco many times a day, and taking alcohol two times a day. I told him to stop these bad habits. He simply smiled at me and said that he would guarantee I too would become like him if I was also a labour worker in Dubai. The work is slowly killing him???
It is a bad state of affair, but the reality. Working conditions for labor class is pathetic. It is true that they are made to work more than permissible time and they are meagerly paid.
Hopefully labor conditions will improve as the world economy strengthens. My dad took a trip to Thailand and he saw many of the things in your post - Labourers there have a very hard life. They work 12-15 hours a day in the fields, and they make the equivalent of less than five USD a day. On the positive side, it doesn't take much money to live there, so $5 can go a long way.
I think labor work is really hard in all places here in Asia not only in Dubai. I’m sure not all employers in Dubai will let you work for more than 8 hours a day. Maybe employees are also given an option to render overtime for them to get a higher pay. For me I wouldn’t always go for overtime because the more overtime hours you’ve worked the higher are the income taxes to be paid, making overtime useless because you only get a little for the extra effort.
I agree with zlob. People always hear about the dream jobs where they are given all these priveleges and they are given beautiful flats, which is true, but they never hear about the labour workers working in poor conditions with no support. Again, this goes towards the fact of the poor being too poor.
