Women in Muslim countries in the Middle East generally wear veils. But huge Asian Muslim nations like Indonesia gave the women the option to choose whether to wear a veil or not.

Not all Muslims still wear veils. Here in our country only a few wears them, I even asked one of them why only a few wears them. She answered; it is not really required for them to wear it, it’s now just an option for those who still want to follow the old tradition. Some say it’s still required, I don’t know much about Muslim practices but I really want to know why some still wear them. Anyone here who knows exactly the purpose of wearing veils?

I live in Michigan, and there is a very large Muslim and Indian population here. There were a few girls in my school that still wore veils, even in the United States! Some of my better friends are originally from around the middle east, and they've told me that the veils have become much more optional than they were in the past. It used to be against the law not to wear them!

Living here in Dubai, a fairly relaxed Muslim country, you see that the women have the choice of how much to cover up. Most wear the basic hijab but some choose to completely veil themselves or wear the golden mask, mostly older ladies. The practise of wearing a complete veil is more a cultural thing than a religious requirement. Recently in Saudi Arabia a women applied to divorce her husband of 30 years as he had lifted her veil to look at her face whilst she slept. Until then even he had never seen her face. Again this is a cultural thing and most unusual these days.

In Dubai it is not necessary to wear them. Anyone that does wear them pretty much does it by choice. There really isn't much forcing done except in some families. Still, grown women have the right to their own decisions. So the answer to the question is yes, they wear veils, but usually by choice.
