Kite surfing is quite popular in Dubai - you can see these surfers at the "kite beach". It can be quite a dangerous sport and locals need a license to surf at Wollongong Beach (only beach that allow kite surfing). For tourists, you need a temporary permit.

I think Arabian countries love soccer (football). They play it all the time. I think a lot of the betting is done on this sport as well. Kids in the street are always playing soccer and they often hold different tournaments. During the world cup, as in other country, everyone is psyched about it and get together with the whole family to watch the games. They are huge fans.

Here are some facts on kite surfing. Visit Kitesurfing at Aseela - Oman Today - September 2007. Below is an extract:

Kitesurfing: the facts

Using a kite to enhance speed is nothing new – in the 13th century in China, canoeists used kites to harness the wind and propel their craft across water

In the 19th century, British inventor and kite enthusiast George Pocock used large kites to ‘sail’ carriages across land. His aim was to establish kite power as an alternative to horsepower, thereby enabling him to avoid the so-called ‘horse tax’ – tolls levied on horse-drawn carriages that were calculated according to the number of horses

The development in the 1970s of controllable kites made kite traction feasible; some 20 years later, kites were being used to power buggies

Kite design advanced in the 1980s under French brothers Bruno and Dominique Legaignoux, who invented the first inflatable kite. The ‘Wipika’ design, launched in the 1990s, had preformed inflatable tubes and a simple bridle system – both of which aided re-launching in water

The craze for kitesurfing took off on the east coast of the US during the late 1990s, following the invention of the patented ‘KiteSki’ system (kite-powered water skiing) by aerodynamicist Bill Roeseler and his water-skier son, Corey. The skies evolved into a single board

Like other water-related and extreme sports, kitesurfing can be dangerous if not practised with care

Kitesurfing has its own extensive (and, to the layman, cryptic) terminology – expressions such as ‘airtime’, ‘wind window’, ‘chicken loop’

Yep, soccer is definitely one of the most popular sports in Dubai, because it's the most popular sport in the world! Dubai is perfect in weather for soccer year round. I'm sure the local bars get a big boost when the world cup is on as well. Does Dubai or someone nearby actually have a professional soccer team?

Kite surfing, invented in 1999 is a cross between surfing, windsurfing and parachuting and is the stuff of dreams for adrenaline junkies. You stand on a board in the sea, grasp a kite and hopefully you will be propelled over the waves. Dubai's only approved kite-surfing beach is at Wollongong Beach.

I think they love soccer/football, as they always play this. I think there's some betting involved in these kinds of sports. The of course have all the watersports, since it is so hot outside, they do enjoy the water. They do a lot of racing and spend a lot of money on their cars. Kite surfing sounds like fun, I might try it sometime.

Sports and gambling is always a potent combination. I guess you can't call gambling a sport so football betting is the best world of both worlds I suppose. Not sure if there are any form of legalized gambling in a Muslim country like Dubai.
